Assorted Battle Damage

U. S. S. CHESTER (CA27)
TORPEDO DAMAGE
20 OCTOBER, 1942

The War Damage Report is a good read with more pictures of both ships. It says the crews of both ships prevented loss of propulsion and made enough temporary repairs to get to port, but it was a near thing. Interestingly, the report points out things like the scarcity of valves along critical piping, the lack of which prevented ruptured lines from being sealed off (getting burned by live steam is a very painful injury). Some improvements were made to the entire class of Cruisers after this report.
